Specifically, we are measuring physical parameters (such as local stellar mass, star formation rate, and first-order star formation history) on a resolved pixel-by-pixel basis using spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting techniques in a distributed computing mode. We are combining the spectral coverage of GALEX, Pan-STARRS1, SDSS, and WISE to generate a value-added, multi-wavelength UV-optical-NIR galaxy atlas for the nearby Universe. This citizen-scientist driven research project uses the Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing (BOINC) middleware and thousands of Internet-connected computers to measure the resolved galactic structural properties of ~100,000 low redshift galaxies. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.ĪB - In this work we present our experience from the first year of theSkyNet Pan-STARRS1 Optical Galaxy Survey (POGS) project. For those members participating in the Formula BOINC series this year, the next sprint is on theSkyNet POGS. In addition to this mostly BOINC Desktop computer. We are combining the spectral coverage of GALEX, Pan-STARRS1, SDSS, and WISE to generate a value-added, multi-wavelength UV-optical-NIR galaxy atlas for the nearby Universe. I started with SETI, then added POGS, then Asteroids, now Rosetta and World Community Grid. You could do that.T1 - A BOINC1 based, citizen-science project for pixel spectral energy distribution fitting of resolved galaxies in multi-wavelength surveys It runs between 38 and 52 degrees C and the exhaust air is much cooler. I used a utility called CoreTemp that keeps track of the CPU temperature. It was shutting itself down frequently until I added a heftier power supply and two more powerful fans. Added a few other projects and crunched BOINC, one computer at a time, doing very little else, 24/7/365 until they die. I am a relative idiot when it comes to this stuff and I ask a lot of questions and complain about outages.īut I started doing soon after it began. BOINC users can select which projects to support with their idle smartphone. It's not easy to do something wrong here. theSkyNet POGS, which conducts astronomy research Asteroidshome. I forget which project I had that had an 80% computation failure rate, because it required 95-100% of CPU time to run. BOINC is a leader in the field(s) of Distributed Computing, Grid Computing and Citizen Cyberscience. I'm also paranoid about running the machine 24/7/365, even though I have extremely good hardware - if I'm doing something that's heavy enough to kick all of the cooling fans on I usually try not to do that thing for very long. I guess I'm paranoid that I'm doing something wrong more often than I should be.
